I love your quote above...
“Remember there’s no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end”. ~Scott Adams
I try every day to remember that everything we do and say impacts others even in very small ways, and this carries on through them to others. Never underestimate the effect you can have on other people.
I'm glad you have effected mine in such a positive way. Wonderful post, I'm going to check out the blog Artists helping Artists. And I love the oven cleaner trick!

Thanks so much Cheryl! You would have loved their scent--it was really lovely!

Too funny about harnessing those horseflies! Good idea.... they would be kept so busy they wouldn't have time to feast on me! Sadly, I did a video shoot when I was on location this day and it got corrupted! Maybe, when Ian is on vacation he can come with me and we'll set up the video while I paint.

Always love your visits! Thanks!

Debbie....such a pretty painting. The pink in the roses is so soft and subtle. Makes me feel like I could actually get a wift of the sweet scent.

If only you could harness the energy of those darn horseflies, and teach them how to take some video footage of you while you work! ;)

My friend Lee Brown (http://adaynotwasted.com) mentioned Auto ThickBox as the plugin he uses...it looks and acts the same as the one you're using, though they have a different name. Strange. I've upgraded my blog with it though. Thanks for sharing. :)

You're pretty resourceful to have found me on Twitter. It's definitely a bit scrabbled.

Thanks for the wishes, same to you. :) Painting outdoors can be uncomfortable and even occasionally tedious, but the rewards are worth it.

Hi Kadira,

Thanks so much for visiting my blog! I appreciate your kind words and am happy to hear you love roses too. So nice that they have been a part of your work as well. Yes we sometimes have to move at a slower pace in order to appreciate the beauty around us. That is why I love plein air painting so much! Wishing you the best in your creative endeavors!

Hi Martyn,

Thanks so much for visiting my blog and taking the time to comment! My son builds my site so I will have to get him to answer some of your technical questions.I will get back to you on your first question. I do know that he has installed a plugin for my pictures so they open up in the middle of the screen. It is called NextGen Gallery-- you can find it through google.

With regards to my font--I originally had two fonts--one italicized that I used for my reflections to go with my work and regular type font I used for the rest of the entry. Brett recently changed some things in the CSS and all my font is italicized so he is going to change that for me soon. :D

Great idea regarding the subscribe button for comments. I mentioned that to Brett already.

I appreciate your nice comment about my work! It truly is my passion! Wishing you many happy days painting this summer!

Warmly,
Debbie

Debbie I love your comment 'that in the haste of life, beauty in others is sometimes overlooked'. How true is that! I too love roses and several of the paintings in my series have had roses or flowers pop into them. I love the story they tell of their beautiful fragile beauty which we need to be 'present' with to appreciate.

Couple of questions Lamey, that I'm just dying to know!

First, this whole site's in WordPress. The blog directory is lameymacdonald.com/blog. But each individual post omits the "blog" directory in the url. For example, this post's url is lameymacdonald.com/natures-story/ instead of lameymacdonald.com/blog/natures-story/. My question is, how on earth did you do that?!

Second, I'm pretty sure you're using a plugin for those pictures so they expand to the center of the screen when the viewer clicks on them. I've seen that on several sites, and I'm really interested in doing it on mine...could you please tell me how? Thanks!

No offense, but from a design standpoint I don't recommend the text being in italics. It's not a personal pet peeve, however; I think most designers would discourage it. For a tagline or for emphasis italics works great, but trying to read a whole post with it is quite tiresome.

You do great work though! I enjoy following this blog. A "subscribe to commments" module would be convenient though.

Best regards,
Martyn Chamberlin

Hi Cheryl!
I always enjoy your visits! Yes Cohogs are large clams--people around here really enjoy digging and eating them! I got my fly spray at a health food store last year because I have to wear a lot out on location and didn't like the toxic brands. It is really nice --just have to apply it more frequently. It is called Herbal Spray with Catnip (outdoor formula--Summer Surivivor) <a href="http://www.deetfree.ca" rel="nofollow">Here</a> is the website where you can order it. Thanks for your kind words about my painting Cheryl! It was great to get back out on location again!

Hi Debbie,
Your painting and reflections are beautiful as always. Hurray!...very happy for you that your favorite park has reopened for the summer.
I've got to ask - what is the natural black fly repellent with catnip that you mentioned? Sounds interesting.
And, what the heck are cohogs (co-hogs) that you said people are digging. Are they like clams?
Lovely painting - so colorful!

Hi Debbie,

The red flowers are so cheery and you've captured them perfectly. I was first introduced to a Quince last year on a garden tour and was very curious about them. The one I saw had peach-colored blossoms.
The little surprises are something I enjoy most about gardening. :)

What a perfect painting in celebration of Mother's Day this coming week. You captured the delicate sheerness of the material perfectly. ;)

Even though it's tiny, that tomato looks so sweet and juicy. I just started my tomato plans from seeds indoors. Makes me look so forward to fresh salsa with cilantro come July/August! And, I agree, the viola's are so cheerful looking. We have really tiny ones, called Johnny Jump Ups, and sometimes they are called Monkey Faces - which always makes me laugh. Is that what you call them in Nova Scotia too?
Your paintings always inspire me. Thank you!!

Love the marble painting! It is really well done. I want to paint marbles now! :) I loved marbles as I was a kid. My brother and I had this big sock filled with our marbles. We had some super cool ones. We would set up a circle with a shoe string, pick out our favorite boulder marble to shoot with and take turns shooting the marbles out of the circle. After the marbles were all shot out of the circle, whoever had the most won. :)

Wow Cheryl!! What a wonderful story! You and your brother must have been really smart to have counted all of those marbles! So awesome that you can recall your mom's marble collection so vividly. Your mom was quite a player--don't think I would have had any marbles left after playing with her! lol
So happy you like the mini paintings--I really enjoy painting them. Thanks for your kind comments. Loved your marble story--made my day! Thanks for sharing! :D

Love the sparkle and shine of those cats eyes. My Mom was a big marble player in her childhood on the local naval base that she lived....and must have been quite the player because she had a huge collection. As a kid it was so fun to sift through her collection and sort out our favorites. Mine always seemed to be the colorful cat's eyes (I wonder why?!). She had all sizes, and colors. Glass, steelies and clay. I remember one in particular that was a huge marble with lots of chips. She told me she had found it in a garden bed. One day my brother and I decided to count how many marbles she had, and I remember it was over 5,000! And, she probably won 4,990 of them - not kidding. Your painting is beautiful (as always). Nice composition. Love the mini's! ;)

Debbie: Beautiful work! My favorite is "A Stately Presence"... I love the depth of field. I also liked "Renewal", "Rounds", "Cradle the Land" and "A Day's Work" too. I have painted pieces similar to "Evening Reflections" and "A Wash of Light" before too... funny how artists are often drawn to similar scenes. :-D

I also enjoy your comments under each painting... keep up the good work!

Take care!
-Kelly-

PS... it's supposed to get up to 74 degrees here in Houston today... wonder what the weather is like in Novia Scotia this time of year? Are you starting to see signs of spring yet? How early in the year are you able to go out and paint on location? -K-

Patrice you will definitely have to visit Nova Scotia. I know you would find lots of subject matter to paint. I think you would really enjoy the rural areas.

Oh Happy Dance Cheryl!! So happy to hear you are going to try plein air! We can share plein air stories this summer. Warning! Once you get the plein air fever, it is very addictive! LOL Warm Thanks for your visit and wonderful comments! Always love your visits!

Now that I am taking an oil painting class, and after reading your blogs, I am inspired to try plein air this summer. I know a community garden I want to check out, and am looking forward to packing up the paints and heading out to this beautiful spot to see what I can put on canvas. Thanks for the inspiration. As always, your painting, prose and reflections are beautiful. Thanks for the ray of sunshine today. ;)

Hi Carol,
So lovely to hear from you. I agree, Jill is a special person. She has displayed great kindness to my son and I.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and your kind words. My heart goes out to you and your colleagues for both the losses and devastation you experienced that fateful day. It is a day that changed the world as we knew it.
I am honored that "A Tribute" has offered some sense of peace and renewal. It was a painting that took on a spirit of its own in which I humbly followed its lead.
I'll get in touch with you via email about purchasing cards of "A Tribute".
Thanks Carol,
Warmly Debbie

Guest room is awaiting your visit...as long as you are OK with cats! Summer vacation IS right around the corner. Best subject matter in early May, early June and early July! ;) Tearooms, of course! I can feel the friendship blossoming and growing already....

What a sensitive and eloquent entry ... indeed, friendships have come to be one of my most treasured possessions (can one really 'possess' a friendship, it's more a gift/blessing?). I realized this especially when I moved from a place I'd lived for 20 years. The precious fruit of friendship takes so long to grow and develop, much like your beautiful apple, on your friends tree. And your wisdom in knowing it is "acceptance" that has nourished that fruit reveals your depth and awareness. You inspire both spirit and artist in me. Many thanks.

Dear Debbie,

I am the friend that Jill Claussen-Munro sent "A tribute" note card to. Jill is one of the most thoughtful, loving people I know and I so appreciated your personal note enclosed with the card. I am going to share these note cards with all of the co-workers that were with me that horrific morning when we witnessed this sorrowful event at our desks in lower Manhattan and while trying to flee the massive "Canyon of Hero's" on foot for hours. We lost two people that day that we knew, an EMT who was a single Mom and a brother of a friend who worked in the So. Tower. Being so upclose and personal to such devastation before my very eyes will never leave my mind or prayers. Ever! You have brought a "calm and peaceful" feeling and renewal of life in this wonderful painting. Thanks so much for sharing it with us, we look forward to sharing your website with all of our friends and family.

Cheryl you always write the nicest comments!! Thanks so much--they make my heart smile. I so understand your point about a small "inner circle". The sweetest of friendships grow gradually over time on a slow simmer.
I would love to paint in your beautiful backyard! So much gorgeous subject matter, but best of all I could meet you in person and we could have tea!! Wouldn't that be fun.... I don't think we would have any trouble thinking of things to talk about!
So appreciate your visits to my blog :D

Wow! Your words are always so touching and your work so incredibly beautiful. What talent you have to be able to create such warmth in both. Your friend is a lucky person....and surely she will be delightfully surprised to receive such a lovely gift from a gracious and warm-hearted friend. I am not a social butterfly and keep a few very close friends in my "inner circle" (as my hubby who is the social butterfly likes to tell me). I can truly relate to your reflections on your painting. This was the perfect post for the very end of my day. Thank you!!

Love your descriptions "hushed with a blanket of white". I agree that the straw colored grasses add a softness to the landscape. You painted them perfectly. Nice directions on the clouds...it is the perfect touch to lead your eye around the composition. Ending your day with tea sounds so comforting. What's your favorite flavor? I've been enjoying chai lately! ;)

Hi Deb:
Just taking a break from my studies and thought a cup of Red Rose and a trip to an art gallery might lift that heavy feeling of information overload. So, I visited your site. I found I forgot about time as I entered an old fashioned visually pleasing gallery of image and written word. IN a word -SPLENDID. If you are keeping stats, my favorite painting was Renewal and my favorite message was the story of Centerpiece. Brett, it is obvious that you skillfully designed this space with much love. What a gift for the two of you to work together on presenting this project. Thanks Deb for sharing your incredible talent. May many blessings shower over you and your gifts to continue capturing such beauty on canvas.

Debbie,
Great views of the park, love the colors of the autumn trees. Fall is a great time of year. Take it all in before the winter comes.

Love the fall colors. Your painting captures it perfectly. The picture of your easel makes me want to be there learning to paint plein air with you.

Excellent answer! I suspect they had changed throughout the course of the day & I agree that painting them realistically from time of photo wouldn't have worked in the end. Wish I could sometimes change China's gray skies to blue when filming here! :-) Digital technology is no cheap thing.

Great question Steven! You are so observant! Must be all that great filming you do.
The clouds actually did change from the time I took the photo. I didn't particularly care for the clouds earlier in the day as I found them flat and lifeless. I liked the fluffier clouds --they felt lively and seemed to suit the mood of my painting. So I took artistic license and added a bit of what they had become as well as my own artistic interpretion! LOL
Thanks for your nice comments as well! I tend to lean towards clear, bright colors while outdoors as I find them positive and cheerful. :D

Another beautiful work. You know I love your color combination. But this time I have a question. The clouds in the photo look more distant and linear, but in your painting, they look fluffier and closer. Is that because the clouds changed throughout the day, or is it to match the style of the rest of the painting?

You'd never know it was a windy day in this painting. The colors are great! Even though the blooms have faded, there is always something still so unique about the form of the plant. You look so sweet with your painting set up. I'm amazed at all of the detail you paint on a small surface. I didn't realize the size until I saw it on your easel in the photo.

Love your observation about a park getting quieter as people move on to their other responsibilities as summer ends. I take my lunch break from work at a nearby park as often as I can. I see the same transition. Your painting is lovely as always. I love the various colors you used on your beach. So fun to get sneak peaks like that along a path. Thanks for sharing!

Oh , Debbie..this is absolutely breath taking. It is so perfect . The ripples in the water are recreated so perfectly , it feels as if I can almost hear the sound they make . I will tell you this much : what I love best about this painting are the ' Shadows ' . They are rendered so perfectly that I believe had any of the great masters been alive , they would have surely envied your skill !
I want to live inside your paintings Debbie :)
Thank you so much for sharing them with the rest of the world .

I want to live inside your paintings Debbie
Thank you so much for sharing them with the rest of the world .

Thanks so much for your visit and kind words Kim! LOL about the reflections :D I really think reflections are so enchanting when the water is still and they are mirrored in the water. Their beauty never seizes to amaze me--almost mesmerizing! Love having you in my twitterstream--have a super weekend too :D

Thanks so much for your lovely comment Janet! I do believe artists have a 6th sense that is guided. Listening to that intuitive voice is the key to creating work that will express a message that hopefully will help or inspire others. I am honored that "A Tribute" can help generate feelings of hope. Thanks for your visit.

Thank you for your very kind words and sharing your story Mia. I am also sorry for the losses you experienced that day. It was a day our world changed forever. Without hope and renewal we would be frozen in fear. The human spirit is a powerful one--many spirits together create change. I am honored that "A Tribute" created feelings of a renewed spirit for you. Hugs!

This is amazing Debbie, how uncanny that all this happened prior to 9/11. I do believe as artists we sense things at a deeper level and I can see that you have done this. I sense the spirit in this painting. My art teacher once told me that some paintings will reveal a 4th dimension. This one certainly has. It speaks volumes. Wonderful story, uplifting in a time of great sorrow.

Thank you for this. I cannot find words to express my gratitude toyou for such a thought provoking rendition of the WTC . Being a survivor of that fateful day in history and having lost so many co workers & friends , along with my boyfriend who was one of the firefighters who perished there that day , this painting will hold a special place in my heart . I love the trees there Debbie , thank you so much for being able to bring beauty to a day of sheer horror .

Oh this is so beautiful - there is such a place right down the road from where I live . I go there to simply be alone amongst the trees and the roses . I love this painting .
